Howdy ya’ll. In 1814 the longest bridge in America at that time (and possibly the longest bridge in the world at that time) was founded in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This structure was 5,690 feet long, and amazingly, we’re told this was a covered, old world style bridge similar to those you see in Amish communities today. To compound things further, the ancient foundations for the 1814 bridge have survived until today, and can still be seen in the water next to the current bridge, known as The Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, which was built in 1930. Today we will look at both 19th century photographs, and exclusive images I captured myself in my visit to this wonderful landscape. I was also able to find the overgrown foundations of one of the earlier 19th century structures tucked deep in the forests surrounding the current bridge. Enjoy, and leave your thoughts and ideas in the comments down below! Topics discussed today; –Wrightsville_Bridge (Columbia,_Pennsylvania)
