James Burgin (University of Würzburg) Gods, Grain, and Gold: Building a Power Base on the Anatolia Plateau This talk will discuss current ideas on how the Hittites forged a kingdom in the face of numerous geographical, environmental, and cultural challenges on the Anatolian Plateau. Adaptations led to a state that, to the best of our archaeological and textual knowledge, functioned quite differently from its Mesopotamian and Egyptian contemporaries. The contours of power in this state will be discussed as will thoughts on the system's demise.
