Phillip Sear plays a piano transcription by its composer of an intermezzo from the symphonic poem 'Fernand Cortez'. It was written by the French pianist and composer Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot (1833-1914). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot was born into musical royalty of his period: his father was the famous violinist Charles Auguste de Bériot (1802-70), and his mother the even more famous singer, Maria Malibran (1808-36). After his mother's untimely death in a riding accident, de Bériot senior married the adopted (half?) sister of the celebrated pianist Sigismond Thalberg, and de Bériot junior had the benefit of piano lessons from his new step-uncle. He became a professor of piano at the École Niedermeyer, and later at the Paris Conservatoire, where his pupils included Maurice Ravel and Ricardo Viñes; he also taught Granados privately.
