Again I'm left questioning where I come across books like these... but I love them. I've always enjoyed the realm of the surreal or its more mundane cousin magical realism. This book absolutely delivers that, keeping in line with a lot of Tony Sandoval's other works. What starts as a friendship between two girls starts to become something more, and then veers off into places I'll let you explore with them. It gets out there. It reminds me of when I'm doing creative writing with students and just rolling with whatever comes to mind. I think Sandoval's art is a treat. He's got his own style going on and definitely knows what he wants to do with it. When action starts to pick up it has a nice dynamic feel to it. When things get moody and morose he piles on the dark colors to really highlight how bad it is. Panels are varied and at times nonexistent. I liked that it ended on a more upbeat note. A lot of times stories like this don't end well. Notice I didn't say it was a “happy“ ending per say... Stylistically, it reminds me of theme's that are often in Farel Dalrymple's works. Often dreamy, nonsensical, and with a unique look to them, they make you ponder what you read and reflect on the themes. I dig that in my graphic novels. If you want to venture into strange worlds like I do, here's a link to check it out.
