Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - 1988 Winter Games, Men's Long Program - Brian Orser of Canada stepped out of a triple flip and downgraded the 2nd triple Axel into a double, and that would be enough to allow the majority of the judges to place him 2nd in the Long Program and 2nd Place overall. Boitano and Orser tied in total of the scores by some of the judges. The first tiebreaker then would be skater with the higher Technical Merit mark, which was why Boitano managed to win the Long Program. The following year, the ISU voted to change the first tiebreaker to be the skater with the highest Artistic Impression score in the Long/Free Program. Had this been the rule at these Olympics, Orser would have won.
