The death of a 9-year-old girl killed during a Russian missile attack on Kyiv shocked Ukrainian parents as the country marked Children's Day on Thursday (June 1). Ukraine and other post-Soviet countries traditionally mark Children's Protection Day on June 1, but this year authorities in Ukraine have cancelled most Children's Day celebrations to mourn the killed child. In Kyiv, five-year-old Hryhoriy hid with his mother Oleksandra in the hallway of their apartment building as incoming Russian missiles triggered the air raid alarm. “He cried, saying that we're all gonna die. I was terrified to hear this from him. It was terrible,“ 25-year-old Oleksandra said, breaking into tears. United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator For Ukraine, Denise Brown, said in a statement that the war was having a “devastating impact on the mental health and well-being of children.“ “I am yet again shocked and saddened by the death of a child who was killed alongside other civilians during another barrage of missiles launched at Kyiv today by Russian armed forces. My thoughts are with their families and those injured,“ the statement read. The UN said in its statement that over 1,500 children had been killed and injured in Ukraine since the start of the war.
