This sparked a conflict that escalated quickly. The Greek president demanded compensation from Bulgaria, but when Bulgaria refused, Greek troops invaded and occupied the town of Petrich and its surrounding region. Small skirmishes broke out along the border, involving 10,000 Bulgarian soldiers and 20,000 Greek soldiers. The conflict was eventually resolved by the League of Nations, which ordered a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Greek troops from Bulgaria, and for Greece to pay 45,000 pounds in compensation. Despite the resolution, around 50 people lost their lives in this short-lived but intense conflict.
