Wildfires are spreading in South Korea today on March 9th 2022. A week after the fire first started in Uljin, Gyeongbuk (North Gyeongdang), forest fires are still spreading on Korea's East coast. Around 20,000 hectares of forest have been affected by fire so far. Fire services are working to contain the fire, with helicopters being used to drop water on the flames in remote areas. Progress has been halted in mountainous areas, due to the difficulty of the terrain and the strength of the fire. This outbreak has now turned into a series of around 10 separate large fires, with a number of residential areas affected. Homes have been destroyed with shelters set up as thousands are forced to evacuate. Electricity cuts have been reported as the fire impacts power supplies. There were fears the fire could impact the Hanul nuclear power plant, however this appears to have been averted so far.
