In a radical departure from the norm of pursuing wealth and success, in this song the poet Kabir celebrates the joy of poverty, and the beauty of simplicity. But this poverty is not empty – it is filled with the joy of remembrance or meditation. Kabir claims that this joy is far greater than the joys afforded by material comfort or luxury. Saboori, or contentment, is the quality which takes one to fakiri, or the state of being utterly free – free of desires, wants and the incessant need for more! Kabira says that the joy in the rememberance of Raam naam is far greater than any riches. This unparalleled treasure has set his mind free, free from all worldly possessions and now Kabira rejoices in the gravest of all adversaries because he has already loosen himself in Raam Bhakti. Like a humble mendicant, he only carries the necessities like a staff and a bowl, he is free to roam anywhere, his kingdom stretches till wherever he can see. Kabira advises us to hold on to the anchor of Raam naam in all the times, whether good or bad. We should never stray away from the roots of simplicity. We should leave few things to God who manages to plan out everything beforehand. Meanwhile our hearts should dwell in love and kindness and with patience, slowly everything will fall back into place. Kabira warns us about the immortal beings that we are as this body will turn into ashes one day. He asks to take the path of simplicity because only simple living will make us appreciate the true beauty of Godhood. Finally Kabira gives us the golden mantra that only contentment can lead us closer to the Almighty! Greed of acquiring more will move us farther from the path of salvation, we should be able to satiate ourselves in whatever we have. Immerse yourselves in the beauty of Raam Bhakti and listen to this Kabir Bhajan in the enchanting voice of Mooralala Marwada Ji. ----------------------------- English translation of the song - Oh friend, my mind has taken to living free!
