How does FOOD ADDICTION fit into the larger historical and cultural context of Substance Use and Abuse? Dr. David Courtwight talks to us at Food Junkies about how the forces of history allowed sugar to become a drug with large-scale toxic consequences. David Courtwright is a University of North Florida emeritus professor of history, whose focus of study has been on the history of drug use, drug policy, and the history of public health. Specifically, his research on drug history spans four centuries, allowing him to develop a unique perspective on the development of psychoactive drug use from the exotic small-scale use to the broad determinants of drug use and social behavior. How has history influenced our drug use, and how has our drug use shaped history? He is the author of books: Forces of Habit: Drugs and the Making of the Modern World, Addicts Who Survived: An Oral History of Narcotic Addiction before 1945, Dark Paradise: A History O Opiates Addiction in America and most recently, The Age of Addiction: How Bad Habits become Big Business. In these books, he draws upon historical, scientific, literary arts, and public policy references - to show how drug usage has been forged by market forces as well as cultural habits. We at Food Junkies Podcast are keen to see how processed food, seen in this context as a drug, has enabled thousands of us to develop a food addiction. And to see how food addiction fits into this larger historical and cultural perspective of substance use and abuse.
