Serbia’s state-owned weapons manufacturer, which sells millions of dollars in armaments to Israel, has decades-old ties with the UAE and has secured lucrative arms deals with the Gulf state. Following the global financial crisis in 2013, Serbia sought billions in loans and pursued arms deals from the UAE the two countries announced their first arms deal that year. Serbia continued collaborating with the UAE on arms deals, including in 2022 with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who was crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy commander of the UAE’s armed forces at the time. Serbia was a major arms supplier during the Cold War when it was part of Yugoslavia. In 2021, its arms exports were valued at approximately $1.2 billion.
