Ardashir I (180 – 242 AD) was the founder of the Sasanian Empire, which he founded by overthrowing the previous, ethnically Parthian Arsacid dynasty. Please note that this isn’t reconstructed Sasanian-era Iranian music, and nor does it seek to be. It’s modern Iranian orchestral music with a thematic idea of Ancient Iran, nothing more. The piece uses the Iranian modal scale of Isfahan, which is identical to the Western Harmonic Minor. The image shown is a 1840 illustration of a Sasanian relief at Firuzabad, showing Ardashir I’s victory over Artabanus IV and his forces.
