Back in 1965, Prévost was initially joined by guitarist Keith Rowe and saxophonist Lou Gare who had both previously been members of Mike Westbrook's band, Gare and Prévost having played together in a hard bop quintet. By 1966, the group had expanded to a quintet with the addition of avant-garde composer Cornelius Cardew on piano and cello, plus former Westbrook band bassist Lawrence Sheaff who played accordion and cello, not bass.
