Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, perhaps the greatest Russian author of the twentieth century, was an Orthodox Christian existentialist, a direct descendant of Dostoevsky’s thinking, and a man who took a mighty axe to the terrible tangled roots of communist totalitarianism.
