‘When I was born, they advised my mother to poison me,’ says Josephat, an albino from Tanzania. White-skinned Africans are being severely discriminated against for their appearance and persecuted by the influence of powerful superstitions. Locals believe albino body parts can be used in witchcraft to cure disease or make them rich and don’t have mercy even on kids. To compound their difficulties, albinos are particularly prone to skin cancer. The reason is that they don’t have enough melanin - a protective pigment.
