The background of this song took place in 1937 when China was under Japanese unprovoked military aggression (WW2). A Kunqu opera troupe of a invaded village was forced to play for Japanese military. the troupers were not willing to, but had no choice , otherwise all the people of the village were going to be killed by the military.
