Mokulito Ukrainian artist and printmaker Oksana Stratiychuk introduces a rare graphic technique of mokulito. This technique of planographic printmaking was invented in Japan in the end of the 20th century as an alternative to stone lithography, and is based on using plywood as a printing plate. The drawing on the plate is made with lithographic materials (ink and pencils), but it is possible to use engraving on the same plate thus combining the effects of planographic and relief print. Wooden texture, clearly visible on the prints, enriches the image. A great advantage of mokulito is that, unlike lithography, proofs can be obtained using an ordinary printing press. The overall edition of proofs made from one plate, though, is relatively small, as the plywood board absorbs ink during the process of printing and the halftones start to vanish.
