Morphine was the first medicinal alkaloid to be isolated from any plant, when it was extracted from Papaver somniferum, or the opium poppy. Before morphine’s isolation opium was itself used medicinally. Morphine is a very effective analgesic, but high demand and its addictive nature fuel opium cultivation and illicit trade. Ongoing research is looking at new methods, such as biosynthesis, to meet growing worldwide opiate demand, as well as synthesis of semi-synthetic and synthetic opioids.
