In this episode Steph and Ollie explore the world of the harems in the magnificent palaces of the Ottoman Sultans in Istanbul, Turkey. They look at the ancient Harem in the Topkapi Palace built in 1459 and the modern harem in the Dohmabahçe Palace which was used from 1856 to as recently as 1924. The visit leaves them both amazed and thoughtful about the lives of those who lived so hidden away behind the harem walls, especially the modern harem which feels so incredibly close to our lives today - yet so radically different.
