On July 24, 2021, China’s State Council announced a new set of guidelines meant to “ease the burden of young students” as they go through mandatory education which extends to senior secondary school. The central government’s top administrative body ordered local governments to stop approving new tutoring companies, and force existing companies to become non-profit organisations. The new guidelines also eliminate classes on weekends and holidays as well as ban tutoring companies from receiving foreign investment.
