In memory of Anouk Aimée who died yesterday, 18 June aged 92 The Image: One man, one woman (to borrow from an Abba song! - Anouk Aimée (Anne Gauthier) looking (and sounding) very natural and French (!) as she and my favourite male actor, Jean-Louis Trintignant, drive from out of season night-time Deauville (Normandy) to Paris - after meeting at the boarding school their children attend. (She misses the train back to Paris if I recall and he offers her a lift - thus it is really during this car journey back that they gradually tell one another their respective life stories, secrets - and fall in love, of course.) People can look very interesting behind a rain splattered windscreen window and Anouk certainly does - sometimes almost like a ghost ( sometimes just plain beautiful mysterious: And Jean-Louis Trintignant, too - the rain and oncoming headlights make him look like a ghost: and interesting: But, I'm gonna be honest, it's mainly Anouk Aimée who looks bewitching, 'French' (!) and fascinating: Two broken hearted and widowed people (at this point they have not revealed to one another their spouses are dead) intolerably lonely, yet surviving and finding unexpected relief and sympathy in each others company. One of the best films ever made and won the you know what award in Cannes...
