After House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota resigned on Tuesday amid international controversy over his invitation to Parliament for a Ukrainian war veteran and who Rota says he didn't know also fought in a Nazi unit in the Second World War, Conservatives spent question period grilling the Liberals on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s role in what they called a “diplomatic disaster.” “Has there ever been a greater diplomatic embarrassment in the history of our country?” Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre asked, referring to the Sept. 22 Ottawa incident. “And yet he can't even show up for work. Where is he and why is he hiding under a rock?” “The Prime Minister just threw the speaker under the bus. But the truth is, the buck stops with him,” Conservative MP Marty Morantz added. “Will the Prime Minister finally take responsibility, do the right thing and apologize?” Government House Leader Karina Gould, who previously questioned if Rota still had the Liberals’ support, said that the House Speaker did the “honourable thing” in resigning after the incident brought “shame and embarrassment” to Canada.
