Iraqi girls are being proposed for marriage at the age of nine, which is half the established minimum marriage age in the country. For boys, the age limit will be lowered slightly—to fifteen years old. This law was passed in its first reading by the country’s authorities. Activists argue that this initiative ‘legalises rape’, while Shia representatives insist that it would prevent ‘immoral relationships’. If Iraq adopts this law, it would set a world record for the lowest marriage age, surpassing Cambodia, where marriage can occur at thirteen. According to UNICEF, child marriages are widespread in countries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, with one in four girls becoming brides as children.
