Here is an unusual recording: Deanna Durbin singing in Russian. With many thanks to my dear Russian friend Natalia Bukanova, for her help: The first song is “Эй , ямщик, гони-ка к Яру“ , it's a 'gypsy' song, written in 1911. [Hey, driver, take me to the Yar!“ «Яр» was a famous restaurant in Moscow, where rich and noble people ate, drank a lot and listened to famous Gypsy singers. The hero of the song orders his coachman to drive to 'Yar' as fast as he can, which means that he wants to forget his sorrows. The second song is «Отвори потихонько калитку», also a classic old romance.[“Open the gate slowly“] The third one is « Две гитары за стеной жалобно заныли» - another old gypsy romance.[“Two guitars wailed sadly behind the wall“]
