Australian troops ready for New Caledonia operation — PM Albanese Canberra has offered France its support in quelling the violent unrest that has already claimed six lives across its Pacific territory of New Caledonia after 600 gendarmes launched a “major operation” to retake control of a major highway. French Foreign Minister Gerald Darmanin claimed the operation had been a success after 76 barricades were set up by indigenous protestors who opposed reforms allowing those who arrived on the archipelago after 1998 to vote.
