In the late 17 century, a prolific painter and a natural scientist Maria Sibylla Merian traveled from Amsterdam to the north-east part of South America (now Surinam) to capture on paper the wildlife of the region, especially insects, reptiles and plants. Her journey was one of the most heroic and dangerous expeditions ever. Without any high-end technologies she's not only managed to survive in the wild, living alongside slavers and pirates, but she created an incredible body of work equally important in the world of art and science. Music by Philip Glass Performed by Lavinia Meijer Shooting and editing by Alexander Kopanev
