For my new outlander video about Jamie & Claire, I’ve once again chosen a German song. I had the impression that the last one went down quite well and so I'll probably be turning to music by German artists from time to time in future. The song “So viel mehr als Liebe“ (So Much More Than Love) is sung by Yvonne Catterfeld, a German singer and actress. ▶️ @yvonnecatterfeld_offiziell?si=X83pd7lHVJgxiiYY. She is incredibly talented and has an exceptionally beautiful voice. I really hope she doesn't mind using the song. To understand music, you don't necessarily have to understand what is being sung, you feel the music especially in connection with images. But you know by now how important the lyrics are in my videos. They form the basis for the theme and the story I want to tell in the video. So I also created a subtitle for the song. What seemed quite simple at first turned out to be more time-consuming than I had expected. The refrain could be translated literally. The rest turned out to be more difficult, cause again I wanted the lyrics to be read along with the rhythm of the song without falling out of time. Not easy. Firstly, because sometimes a lot of words are sung in a short time, and secondly, because the grammar, pronunciation and sound of the two languages (German and English) are very different. Added to this is the poetic picture language used for the lyrics. Nobody talks like that in normal life. Again, I was faced with the problem that some things simply can't be translated one-to-one. The German viewers among you will notice that the translation is very free in some places. However, the content, the message and the meaning remain the same. A faithful translation sometimes just doesn't sound good or is not compatible with the English language or the flow of the song. My energetic colleague knows what I'm talking about🤓❤️. T., I am again infinitely grateful to you🙏🏼🥰. Without your support, the subtitle would not be what it is now, a little work of art in its own right. It may sound strange, but it is. It's just as much work as the video itself. T. invested a lot of time, read through my translations and pointed out mistakes or phrases that are unusual in everyday language (nevertheless, I have allowed myself the artistic freedom to use some phrases that are not quite correct or unusual, simply because they sound better and harmonize with the melody). T. created her own translations, even though she doesn't understand the German text. Only on the basis of my first raw one-to-one translation and what the music and images made her feel. She gave me incredible food for thought, found solutions and incorporated a lot of creativity and sensitivity. So, although the subtitle deviates enormously from the German text in places, it still captures its quintessence. What T. has contributed is impressively profound and beautifully poetic. With her help, we managed to breathe a little of the flair of the original text into the subtitle. We even managed to preserve the structure of the song and a certain recurring phrase, its “red thread“, so to speak. This was extremely important to me, it would have been so much easier if I had done without it🤯🤦🏼♀️. The song haunted us both to sleep, but it was worth it. So what is the song about? What is so much more than love? In the course of the video, I tell you from Claire's point of view why Jamie is so much more than love to her. At first you might think, what could he be more than the love of her life? What weighs more than that? But Jamie is so multifaceted, you can't reduce him to Claire's great love. He is her hero, her savior, her anchor, but also her antithesis and her compass. He gives her wings and inspires her, but also slows her down when necessary. But he is also a father, uncle, brother, nephew, laird, landowner, soldier. He was a warrior, outlaw, prisoner and printer and of course he is her Jamie, her love, her husband, her eternal friend, life partner and soul mate❤️♥️❤️. Thank you T., your teeny tiny addition of text, brings this out even more. I hope the video takes you away and enchants you with so much concentrated Jamie and so much love.
