M. Sarlis was the pioneer buddhist revivalist painter of Sri Lanka in the early 20th century. His paintings adorned all Buddhist homes. He was a famous temple painter as well as commercial & portrait artist. He also introduced lighting & made Wesak pandals famous by making them grander in appearance. Earlier they were vey basic & made of a few logs. His star pupil was G.S. Fernando the famous water colour master of Sri Lanka. His son Susil Premaratne went on to become famous in both the art & music arenas of Sri Lanka.
