In the bottom right 📷 picture, we see 3 muscles that rotate the scapula. The upper trap and serratus anterior fibers will both work to ↗ upwardly rotate the scap, which is important for proper overhead mobility. The lower traps also upwardly rotate (thanks @premierfitnessmassage for correcting me here on the original post), but maybe even more importantly, they will CONTROL upward rotation. Think of them as the 🚦 brakes that make sure the scapula doesn’t translate too far ⬆ up when rotating. When the lower trap can’t control this motion, it is called scapular dyskinesis. This is a main player in almost all shoulder overuse 💢 injuries. In fact, 😲 100% of people with shoulder impingement show scapular dyskinesis! This exercise will help you 💡 activate your lower trap, get your shoulders away from your ears, and give you a nice lat 💪 pump at the same time! Tag a friend with shoulder pain and share the wealth!
