Today we’re going to have a look at the first* steep grade railway in Europe, the original Rigibahn. The Rigi is a mountain located in central Switzerland within the cantons of Schwyz and Luzern. It’s a popular tourist destination. Almost completely surrounded by lakes, the journey to the top offers spectacular views. Two of Switzerland’s three standard gauge rack railways serve the Rigi mountain. The one we’re looking at today starts in Vitznau, a scenic boat ride away from the city of Luzern (Lucerne). Unfortuntely the weather was perfect until about 10 minutes before departure. Still, I really wanted to record a run on this line before the new Stadler trains were put into service (about a week later). In the future, I’m hoping to record a run with good weather and a side view down the mountain, which is breathtaking.
