Using a sliding recoil system, the cylinder is rotated by being forced back along the frame after the first shot. This also forces the hammer back which makes every shot single action, said to be incredibly accurate and able to be fired in rapid succession. In the 1890s when this pistol was being developed Britain lacked a semi-auto self loading pistol that had the stopping power of .455 Webley, by 1901 when it was first produced it saw mild success. But overall was too complex and susceptible to the elements to be used in any great number by the military, only approximately 4,200 were produced.
