Andante sostenuto (21:44) Charles Camillieri (1931-2009) hailed from Malta and it is likely the country-island foremost composer. Originally a pianist and accordionist, he lived a travelling life across Australia, England, Canada and America, working among Oscar-winning musical teams and learning new compositional styles. His Piano Concerto No. 1 comes from his first musical period in which he claimed to be a “Maltese Bartok or de Falla”. Camillieri then uses folk motives into a modernist-neoromantic style that presents Spanish, Arab and Italian traits.
