“The mobilisation of the army changes the life of a young man. He becomes a figure on a chess board of war. A piece of shrapnel blinds him and his cries of “I cannot see“ become a refrain symbolising the horrors of war.“ source: Czech Feature Film II: 1930-1945 ČENĚK ZAHRADNÍČEK Born 1900. Died 1989. Along with Vladimír Šmejkal he shot his famous films Atom věčnosti (1934), Ruce v úterý (1935) and Příběh vojáka (1934). This film won the main prize at the world competition UNICA. In 1937 he came to professionals at the Barrandov Studios as a cameraman to the film news. Sadly, this work was fatal for him. In 1942 he had to shoot how Germans wipe out Lidice. After the February 1948 [note: when Communists came to power in Czechoslovakia] someone did not like Zahradníček and the fact he was shooting in Lidice was used so that he had to leave his job in the film news. He then came back to amateurs. Until his retirement he worked as an archiver in Central House of Folk Art Creativity.
