«In the distance, a hum starts to build and a picnic is minutes away from ruin. You can hear an ominous crescendo as the swarm comes nearer. The family takes cover as the wasps descend and dive towards the abandoned jam sandwiches. Finally, sated, they disperse but it’s not over yet. Some are now looking for caterpillars. Some species of wasp lay their eggs in their living bodies. The larvae grow and eat the caterpillars from the inside, carefully avoiding the vital organs to keep them alive until they are ready to take flight. Soon, a new swarm begins.» This is the mental image Tony Mizen () had in his mind while composing “Wasps“, one of the seven new pieces of his brand new collection “Arthropoda“ (2021). I bought the book yesterday and I felt in love with it... What a mastery in writing for the ukulele, what a gem in its contemporary repertoire! ► Ukulele: Giuseppe Triolo’s Custom Soprano (1985) ► Strings: Aquila Soprano Re
