Sever'yan Bogdanov - trombone, Yaroslav Belyakov - conductor. Great hall of Moscow Conservatory, Bernhard Krol's Capriccio da camera is a study in musical variation. The form of this piece is incredibly continuous and its transitions are often woven so tightly that it is hard to make out the start or end of any given sentence or phrase. There are, however, specific sections of very clear horizontal and vertical transformation. The opening theme is one that mixes diatonic and chromatic flavors. Krol uses this opening statement to contextualize almost all of his harmonic, melodic, and motivic phrasing. He cuts and pastes these elements to create stability and confusion throughout the entire piece. These relationships are used to compartmentalize the basic form, but he is in no way limited by it.
