This past week was marked by the BRICS summit in Kazan, where political and economic outcomes will be discussed for a long time. Notably, BRICS countries account for half of the world’s potato harvest, a figure that will rise by 8 million tons with Pakistan's upcoming membership. Today, Pakistan utilizes Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan as transit countries for exporting potatoes and other goods to China, Russia, and Central Asia. This developing trade route is fostering a peaceful environment in the region. As we approach the end of October, it’s time to evaluate this year’s potato harvest, both in quantity and quality. Unfortunately, due to drought conditions in many Russian regions, a significant portion of the harvest does not meet market standards. As a result, the prices for quality potatoes are on the rise, reflecting their scarcity. In this episode, we will also explore the potato production situation in Western Europe, where rainfall has impacted harvests, particularly in Belgium, which is still catching up. We’ll discuss price trends and the outlook for potato markets in Ukraine and Poland.
