The homely village of Brienz is surrounded by a charming mountain landscape at the eastern end of the turquoise Lake Brienz. Known as a Schnitzerdorf, Brienz has a long tradition in woodworking and still has a wood sculpture school and a violin building school. The municipality of Brienz is located on the shores of Lake Brienz and at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn (2350 meters above sea level). It extends from the Brienzergrat in the north over the lowest point (lake level 564 m above sea level) to the highest elevation Schwarzhorn (2928 m above sea level) south of the lake and borders eight neighboring communities as well as the cantons of Lucerne and Obwalden. The green-blue lake of Brienz, on whose south bank dark pine forests stand directly on the water, clearly bears the character of a mountain lake. The village has five alpine pastures.
