Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, has stepped up to support Camilla in King Charles’ absence. The Duchess has always kept a low profile, and rarely courts publicity. But it’s reported that she has attended an amazing 5,000 royal engagements since marrying into the Royal Family. Birgitte has accompanied Camilla at a number of recent events, just as King Charles has been forced to take a step back from public life. King Charles is currently being treated for cancer, and attends a more limited number of official engagements. The Danish-born Duchess married Prince Richard, the youngest grandson of George V, in 1972. Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, has also attended dozens of engagements this year. The pair met in Cambridge, where Birgitte attended a finishing school while Richard attended Cambridge University. The Duchess also has a portfolio of more than 60 charities, and spends a lot of her time supporting and promoting them.
