This video is a short clip of Leonard Bernstein’s final concert which took place on August 19th, 1990 at Tanglewood. Despite a severe coughing fit during the scherzo of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, as well as fighting both pain and exhaustion, Bernstein finished conducting the concert, receiving not only a massive ovation, but also an outpouring of love and admiration from everyone present. Audio of the concert was released on CD and can be found here: On October 9th, Bernstein officially announced his retirement from conducting. He died in his New York apartment at The Dakota five days later on October 14, of mesothelioma, aged 72.
