’Notorious’ is a love story pretending to be a spy thriller. How apt then, that the lovers spend much of the film pretending not to be in love with each other. The racetrack scene is utterly heartbreaking - a superb example of cinematic restraint. The estranged lovers, trying - and failing - to keep their passion in check. Grant’s steely veneer and brittle barbs are like splinters to Bergman’s thin and crumbling facade - “It wouldn’t have been pretty, if I had believed in you...“ “If you only once had said that you love me“ I don’t own the copyright of course, and only share to encourage you to buy the film for yourself.
