On 16 March 1972, ITN caught up with Princess Anne, Princess Royal, who was training hard with her horse Doublet for the Badminton Horse Trials in April. In the long run, the Princess Royal was preparing for the Munich Olympics in the summer. Anne had already won gold in the 1971 European eventing championships, and was therefore a serious equestrian Olympic medal contender. The Princess Royal's trainer, Alison Oliver, had no doubts about her strength and ability to compete in Germany. All for the better, as Anne was well known to have a “dislike of not winning”. Unfortunately, the 1972 Badminton horse trials and the Munich Olympics three-day event were both won not by Anne but by Captain Mark Phillips. After meeting in Munich and discovering a shared passion for riding, Princess Anne and Captain Phillips were married in November 1973. #PrincessAnne #PrincessRoyal #Equestrian #HorseRiding #RoyalFamily To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - @ITNArchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🎥 Check out our TikTok - @itnarchive1955
