Princess Anne visited Bristol yesterday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Victim Support. Anne, the charity’s president, praised the staff and volunteers for their remarkable service. During her visit, the princess delivered a speech and cut a special anniversary cake. Princess Anne was joined by local dignitaries, including Bristol’s Lord Mayor and High Sheriff. The Princess Royal became Patron of Victim Support in 1989 and President in 2001. She takes a close interest in the charity’s work and regularly attends events. The charity, founded in 1974, helped victims of crime and traumatic incidents across England and Wales. Victim Support was initially founded in Bristol as the “Bristol Victim Support Scheme“ by volunteers. It began with a £1,500 loan, helping 500 victims in its first five months. Yesterday, Victim Support was recognised for assisting 140,000 people annually, covering domestic abuse and fraud.
