Homosexuality may not be illegal in Turkey, but it's certainly a taboo subject, considered by many as deviant behaviour. In the armed forces, the only way to escape military service for men is to be listed as homosexual: if someone is proved to be gay they will be declared unfit for service on grounds of 'sickness'.
