Athäl'Zäckar collects together several pieces from his lysergic voyages, into a hallucinatory album of raw beguiling black metal. Trhä is the closest sonic companion to this sound that I can summon, and though there is the ghost of Kellar synth’s BSOD buried in there somewhere, this is a different kind of narcotic effect, and much less nasty in affect. There is a mischievously playful quality, and sinister naivety to its music box melodies, buried, smothered, then given full flight among the harsh bramble thicket of riffs, rhythms and melancholic ambience. I can’t leave without recognising that photo either. This surely has the greatest artwork since the Moldé Volhal album. Great shot. Another fascinating, compelling release from the French Cërcle Mortüaire collective.
