Steve Rothery of Marillion is one of the biggest influence on my own guitar playing, and I've always loved his solos. This one at the end of Grendel () is a particular favourite of mine and when I did a search there didn't seem to be many videos showing it being played in enough detail for someone wanting to learn it, so I thought I'd upload my own. It's not intended as a lesson, nor do I think it's 100% accurate - I just learned it by ear, so it's quite likely parts of it are wrong; however, it's definitely pretty close. If there are any bits I have wrong, do please post a video response to show me what I should be playing. I always enjoy learning and correcting my mistakes. And if anyone does want any of the phrases slowed down or deconstructed, again just post a comment. I never get tired of playing this solo - it's so melodic and fits the song so beautifully. It owes a lot to Steve's influences of Hackett/Gilmour and yet frames them in an entirely new way that's all his own. I hope it inspires people to give Steve's playing another listen - he's right up there on the list of most amazing, but often overlooked players.
