This one alludes to count Henri de La Rochejaquelein, a french nobleman who led the Great Catholic and Royal Armies of France during the Vendean Counter-Revolution. Henri was known for defying republican forces by wearing distinctive apparel that would single him out, and at one point a republican gunner shot his hand and inutilized it, but instead of retreating he advanced, attacking with his left hand instead. He pursued guerrilla warfare even after the Great Army was routed, and was surrendered by republican soldiers, who cowardly shot him in the head point-blank. The last stanzas allude to his famous quote: “Friends! If I advance, follow me! If I retreat, kill me! If I die, avenge me!“
