In a recent Huberman Lab episode, my guest was Chris Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator. During the episode, we discuss how the tone of speaking voice shapes the emotional tone of an entire conversation and why a low-frequency, calm voice creates a calm state in the listener and a calm, rational conversation. Regardless of whether your voice is high or low or somewhere in between, this information can be applied to have more effective conversations of all kinds. It all boils down to how the neurons in the auditory cortex respond to low-frequency sounds — they essentially create a low-frequency oscillation pattern within the listener. The episode also focuses on how to detect lies, the essential features of benevolent negotiations and more. Watch the full episode on YouTube:
