Gladioli, also known as Sword Lilies, are a cormous perennial known for their striking flowers. Belonging to the iris family (Iridaceae), the genus Gladiolus has approximately 180 species found across Europe, Western Asia, and South Africa. The name “sword lilies“ is derived from their foliage, which can range from sword-shaped to grassy, depending on the variety. These flowers bloom atop tall spikes, displaying funnel-shaped flowers in a wide range of colors. The blooming process typically begins at the base of the stem. Gladioli bloom during spring in warmer regions and throughout summer in cooler temperate areas. To ensure a continuous display of color, they can be planted every 4-6 weeks throughout the season. When planting, position them in a sunny location protected from strong winds.
