The US Navy calls it the most technically complex and advanced warship the world has ever seen. It is the result of over 20 years of research, planning, development, construction, test and activation. The program began in the 90's as concept designs. Engineering and modeling began in the early 2000's, and fabrication began in 2009. The keel was laid in 2011. The ship was launched on Oct. 29, 2013. BIW is also constructing follow-on ships, the future Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) and Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002). Zumwalt has stealth capabilities, having a radar cross-section akin to a fishing boat despite her large size. The Zumwalt class was designed with multimission capability. Unlike previous destroyer classes, designed primarily for deep-water combat, the Zumwalt class was primarily designed to support ground forces in land attacks, in addition to the usual destroyer missions of anti-air, anti-surface and undersea warfare.
