WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been freed from Belmarsh prison in the UK, after five years behind bars. Assange’s release comes as part of a plea deal with the US Justice Department, in which Assange will reportedly plead guilty to a single felony count of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information, in return for the extradition request against him being dropped. It’s thought he will be sentenced to around 5 years in jail, but that his time already served in Belmarsh will count towards this. The deal, according to court documents, will effectively end the years-long battle between Washington and Assange, meaning the whistleblower will finally walk free after being in various forms of captivity since 2011, when he sought asylum inside London’s Ecuadorian embassy. Assange is expected to submit his plea at a court in the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory in the Pacific, after which he will return to his native Australia. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom over censorship, truth over narrative.
